The Hidden Complexity of SNMP – Lessons from Building and Maintaining the Prometheus SNMP Exporter
NMP is often dismissed as an old and simple protocol that “just works”. Yet anyone who has tried to monitor real-world network infrastructure knows that reality is very different. This talk explores the hidden complexity behind SNMP through the lens of the Prometheus SNMP Exporter, one of the most widely used open source integrations for bringing network telemetry into modern observability platforms. We’ll look at why seemingly straightforward tasks—such as collecting interface counters or environmental metrics—become surprisingly challenging once you encounter vendor-specific MIBs, complex indexing schemes, huge tables, counter semantics, SNMPv3, and devices that don’t quite follow the standards. Drawing on real examples from maintaining the exporter and helping users operate it at scale, the session explains the design decisions behind the project, common pitfalls, and practical techniques for debugging and optimizing SNMP-based monitoring. Basti is part of the Prometheus Team where he maintains the snmp_exporter, fortigate_exporter and the modbus_exporter.
