From Checks to Metrics: Re-Architecting ISP Monitoring at National Scale with Icinga2

We present how we re-architected monitoring for a nationwide ISP, moving from active checks to a scalable, metrics-driven model. By decoupling data collection from state evaluation, we use Elasticsearch, Tornado and some effort to process hundreds of thousands of metrics per minute, while Icinga2 remains a central state engine. We highlight challenges, including syncing Director data and handling passive check scaling.
